One team that has never really got going into the IPL is Kings XI Punjab. The IPL franchise owners decided that they need to proceed with a huge makeover before the 2021 IPL tournament in order to have a change of fortune and results. They decided a team name change was due and decided to rename the team as Punjab Kings (PBKS).
The owners have also made a number of changes to the PBKS squad for the 2021 IPL but have retained a core bunch of players who did well during the 2020 IPL in the United Arab Emirates. KL Rahul had a good run in 2020 as captain and he will once again lead the side.
While there have been changes to the team name and the players, the Punjab Kings betting odds for the 2021 IPL hasn’t changed as thy continue to enter the tournament as the underdogs.

Punjab Kings have never looked threatening or strong enough to win the IPL Championship in the history of the tournament and that says a lot. While Punjab Kings have never had the strongest team in the IPL, they have had a strong bunch of players in certain seasons but have yet failed to perform.
Our cricketing experts share their IPL betting tips and point out two reasons for their lack of success in the IPL is due to the lack of quality leadership i.e. a strong captain and the inability of the overseas and domestic players to mix together like some of the other IPL franchises. Bookmakers are still not convinced that Punjab Kings have got the right formula for the 2021 IPL and that’s why you find Punjab Kings betting odds continue to be dismal.
Bet365 has given Punjab Kings betting odds of 10.00 to win the tournament which puts them at the bottom of the list along with the Rajasthan Royals. Will Punjab Kings continue to disappoint and prove the oddsmakers right or will they defy their critics and rise to the occasion and be a force in the 2021 IPL?

Punjab Kings have arguably the best combination of players in their squad than they have had in the last few seasons. They have a nice blend of experience and youth and it will be up to KL Rahul to bring them all together and get them to perform consistently as a unit. There are a couple of big names in the squad and some promising young players.
Without a doubt the captain KL Rahul is the biggest star in the squad and he will have to lead from the front with the bat. They have also retained the old warhorse the ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle who could very well be playing his last IPL. PBKS will back Gayle for the first few games but if he does not perform, they should quickly replace him with Dawid Malan.
The hard-hitting Nicholas Pooran and the exciting Shahrukh Khan can light up the middle order when they get going. In the bowling department, PBKS will depend on the expensive Jhye Richardson, the experienced Mohammed Shami and all-rounders Chris Jordan and Moises Henriques.
Punjab Kings betting odds can change dramatically if the team owners get their playing XI combination correct at the start of the tournament. In the past, it has taken them a few games to sort out their playing XI and this has hurt the franchise. If Punjab Kings gets its playing XI right, they could defy the oddsmakers and give a lot of teams a run for their money.
The biggest buy for Punjab Kings during the 2021 IPL was Aussie pacer Jhye Richardson. There was a bidding war to get Richardson and Punjab Kings was willing to spend up to 14 crore rupees to get him into the squad. The management decided that they needed to strengthen the bowling department and also went after Aussie speedster Riley Meredith and paid out 8 crores to bring him on.
In the batting department, Punjab Kings went after Shahrukh Khan and ended up paying 5.25 crores to bring him in. They also paid out 4.2 crores to bring in Aussie all-rounder Moises Henriques and 1.5 crores to get England’s Dawid Malan into the squad.
Here is a record of KP’s finishes in the Indian Premier League since the tournament started in 2008:
2008: Semifinalist
2009: Fifth
2010: Eighth
2011: Fifth
2012: Sixth
2013: Sixth
2014: Runner-up
2015: Eighth
2016: Eighth
2017: Eighth
2018: Seventh
2019: Sixth
2020: Fifth
Punjab Kings made some significant changes to its squads as they released a number of players and drafted in a lot of new faces.
The overseas players that they decided to release in 2021 included Glenn Maxwell, Jimmy Neesham, Hardus Viljoen, Sheldon Cottrell, and Mujeeb ur Rahman. The domestic players that were released included Karun Nair, Krishnappa Gowtham, Jagadeesha Suchith and Tajinder Singh.
The big names drafted into the squad for the 2021 IPL season are Jhye Richardson, Riley Meredith, Moises Henriques, Dawid Malan and Fabian Allen. Punjab Kings have once again gone after a number of young and promising domestic players like Shahrukh Khan, Jalaj Saxena, Ukarsh Singh and Saurabh Kumar.
Going into the 2021 IPL tournament, we can clearly see that Punjab Kings has a good batting line-up atleast on paper. KL Rahul and M Agarwal should open the batting and either Chris Gayle or Dawid Malan should bat at 3. You bring in Nicholas Pooran at four, the experienced Deepak Hooda at 5 and the exciting Shahrukh Khan at six and you have a side that should be able to challenge most bowling attacks in the IPL.
You then throw in the all-rounders in Mandeep Singh and Moises Henriques and you have good batting depth. Do keep in mind that you also have Fabian Allen in the squad who recently showed for the West Indies that he can play the big shots at the death and also bowl very economically. Based on the wicket, Punjab Kings can interchange between Henriques and Allen.
Punjab Kings used the IPL 2021 auction to strengthen their bowling department but only did so with regards to the pacers. They do have a good fast bowling line-up with M Shami, Jhye Richardson, Chris Jordan and Riley Meredith. However, they don’t have good spin bowlers who can win a game for them.
They are going to be depending heavily on young spinners like Ravi Bishnoi, Sarfraz Khan, Utkarsh Singh, M Ashwin and Harpreet Bar to deliver in the spin department for them. None of these bowlers are accomplished spinners and Punjab Kings will have to roll the dice and see which spinners click for them. If they get it right early on, they will increase their odds of winning. If they get it wrong, they could once again fail to make the playoffs.
Punjab Kings has a good team going into the 2021 IPL tournament. But based on our cricket pundits IPL predictions, they are not going to win the 2021 IPL Championship. However, we do think they have the ability to make the playoffs this time.
