When it comes to betting, just as in life, there are certain do’s and don’ts that you should adhere to.
These aren’t necessarily going to be gospel when it comes to betting on football, but they should give you some idea of what to do and almost more importantly, what not to do.
In all honesty, these could be applied to pretty much any type of sports betting really and whatever happens, you need to take them on-board and adapt them into your betting strategy.
Whilst they aren’t specific things or tips to look out for when it comes to placing your bets, they will give you an idea about how to go about structuring your bets and also a few key pointers as to areas you might be able to improve.
All too often we see people just diving into their bets and placing their bets because their mate gave them a tip down the pub. If you want to bet like this, then that is completely fine. It’s not up to us to tell you how to go about spending your money.
But if you are looking to take your football betting to next level then you need to be more stricken about your approach and adjust your attitude towards it accordingly.
When we have gone over these fundamentals below previously, people have often called them our 10 commandments. Well, there might not be quite 10, but we do see them as set of commandments For the most part though, we lay them out like this to help people to understand easily and essentially, make more money!
DO Research Your Bets
We have this ‘do’ right at the top because we feel that it’s the most important aspect of football betting. You simply must research your bets before wagering. All too often we see people just go and bet without putting any practice into seeing why or if that bet might be profitable. Whenever someone gives us a tip we always ask why they think this and if they hesitate for any length of time then we know they haven’t put any research into that bet.
Think of it like a 100m sprinter, if you will. There is no way they wouldn’t go and train as hard as they could before the final in the Olympics.
They are going to do all they can to make sure they as well prepared for that race as they can be. Betting is much the same; except instead of the sprinter spending hours in the gym, we spend our time looking through stats, form and whatever else we can get our hands on to make sure we’ve exhausted all our efforts into finding that gem of a bet.
DO Use Multiple Betting Sites
If you’ve managed to read any of our other articles on our site then you might be aware just how strongly we feel about this point. Whatever you do, don’t be afraid to open new betting accounts.
Having several accounts on the go means you can jump between each to make sure you always get the best odds in the industry or thereabouts. We can’t understand why many recreational bettors spend their lives on one bookmaker when it’s so simple to open a handful more and then for them to potentially miss out on a ton of value.
If you look at professional bettors, they will all have dozens of accounts. Granted, they will probably use just two or three for the majority of their bets, but if they ever needed to jump over and grab an enhanced price on another bookmaker, they can do at the drop of a hat.
Another reason is to just take advantage of the amazing betting promotions that you can pick up these days. We’ve seen it a million times where players will sign up a new account, claim their free bet, withdraw their winnings and then be off.
This is absolutely fine, as long as you meet the withdrawal criteria, so why not take advantage of these promotions? It’s literally free money and getting anything for nothing in this world is very, very rare!
But not all betting sites can be accessed from India, here we have a list of the best football betting sites for India, not only do they accept us but we can make deposits in rupees and cash out through e-wallets like neteller.
DO Look to Improve Your Skills
It’s the same as anything in life; you should always be looking to improve when in the betting industry.
At no point will you ever say you have this cracked, because you won’t. Unless you are sat on a beach in the Caribbean somewhere with multiple millions in the bank from betting, then, maybe you might have cracked it!
There are so many ways in which you can improve when it comes to betting, with the easiest probably being in the way you research your bets. Whether you can afford to invest hours or minutes into your research, there will likely be a way in which you can make it more efficient or simply get the most out of your time.
You may look to improve your bankroll management or even limit/increase the frequency in which you bet. You may move into new markets, learn these and try something different or you may decide to try a new sport altogether. Either way, there is always something you can do to get better. Nobody is perfect and nobody will win all the time, but you can certainly do all you can to be the best you can, and that’s what it’s all about.
DO Have Fun
For the majority of us, betting is always going to be a hobby or recreational activity that we take part in. There is no need for us to rely on an income from betting, so why should we worry about whether we win or lose.
The thrill should be in the chase and seeing if your hard work will pay off. The majority of the time we will lose (not saying that we won’t still make profit though!!), that’s just fact and it’s for this reason that we need to remember to enjoy the good times as they might not be along as often as we would hope.
Another thing we recommend doing is if you manage to win a sizeable chunk of change, to go out and buy something tangible with it. You’ve invested your money by backing your ability to pick a winning bet and by having something that you can actually grab onto will always be a reminder of this paying off.
It’s easy to leave money in your betting account, but then it’s just numbers staring back at you on the screen. It you then go and buy that 50″ plasma TV you’ve always wanted, then you could watch it every day knowing you essentially got that for free!
DO NOT Put too Much Faith in Tipsters
When starting out it’s very easy to follow the countless amounts of online tipsters and blogs that are promoting sports betting tips for your bets. But we would like to just make you tread with caution as a lot of them spend no time in research and just merely promote them to provide (worthless) content for their site.
We do actually like the idea of going and seeing which markets other people are betting on. The only difference is that we take these tips and then go and perform our own research on these picks to see if they stack up.
There are generally no right or wrong answers when it comes to using other peoples tips and if they have explained their tips and backed them up with some sort of analytical data, then by all means use them as you wish.
If the site just has something like ‘Manchester United to win at 1.80’ then we would immediately be wary and at least doing our own research before making the bet.
DO NOT Bet More Than You Can Afford
This probably goes without saying, but you should never bet more than you can afford to lose. Betting, for the majority of you, will be a pastime that you should enjoy and if you want to invest your disposable income into betting, then so be it. But you should always be betting or even better, just depositing what you can afford to lose.
So say you decide to stop in one night and then decide that you will have a couple of bets on whilst you sit and watch the football. If you say, right I’m going to deposit £40 as that’s what I would have spent if I went out and that is my limit for the night. This is how it should be done.
If after your bets lose and you decide to keep betting then this is where it can get dangerous. You are likely betting to chase your losses and this is a situation where no one wants to be. The £40 was your limit and then you need to learn to just walk away.
What’s great about most of the bigger bookmakers these days is that you can set daily limits on both the amount you can deposit and the amount you can wager. For those of you who sometimes lose a little bit of self-restraint, and let’s face it, we’ve all been there, then these personal limits are a god send to stop you losing more than you can afford.
DO NOT Chase Loses
This kind of ties into the two above points quite nicely in that you should never chase your loses. It can be frustrating to lose a bet and then have that money that you were virtually counting in your head to be taken away by a last minute equalizer
. It’s very easy to just go and bet on another game to try and win back that money you thought you’d already won. Heck, the amount of games that some of the bigger bookmakers offer means we can literally bet around the clock on a range of leagues.
With betting it’s so important to just say enough is enough and remember that there is always another day in the betting industry. It’s all well and good losing what you set out to do, and whilst no one likes losing, you can be at peace and not let it worry you. But when you have gone out and lost three or four times more than you had set out, that’s when it becomes a really bad, dark day.
It probably comes down to just betting for the sake of having a bet more than anything. You’re already down for the day and you want to get back to even, we get that. But you’d be so much better leaving it until another day, coming back with a fresh head and starting to claw that money back by making, good, sensible and profitable decisions.
DO NOT Get Impatient
Patience is one of the most important aspects all good bettors must have; and in abundance! If you meet or talk to any professional bettor you will likely see how calm and levelled headed they are (the successful ones, anyway). It’s almost eerie like to be honest, but it’s so, so important.
The thing is, most bettors realise that the majority of their bets will probably lose or at least half of them will. It’s just something you have to live with and by getting annoyed will only cloud your judgment for your next bet.
By not staying patient and getting flustered with yourself it starts putting you in a dangerous position of chasing losses, betting what you can’t afford and betting for the sake of it, three commandments we said you should never do. Stay patient in this industry and eventually you will make money!
