India Coast To Victory Over Sri Lanka And Take 1-0 Lead In T20 Series

India had to wait an extra couple of days to get their 2020 campaign started as the first T20 in Guwahati was abandoned due to rain which changed the three match T20 series against Sri Lanka into a 2 match series as back-to-back scheduling by the BCCI meant no reserve days were scheduled.

Indian Fast Bowlers Shine

India won the toss and put Sri Lanka into bat. All eyes were on the J Bumrah who was making his return after a layoff due to injury. Bumrah bowled reasonably well sending down his 4 overs for 32 runs and picked up 1 wicket.

The Sri Lankan openers got off to a start and M Perera (34) who came in at number 3 looked to stabilize the innings. W Sundar took the first wicket and K Yadav picked up two more wickets to expose the Sri Lankan middle-order.

N Saini and S Thakur then stole the show for the Indians as the duo picked up 5 wickets between them. Saini bowled with a lot of pace and determination which saw him finish with figures of 4 overs, 18 runs and 2 wickets. Thakur took 3 wickets and conceded just 23 runs.

Sri Lanka struggled to clear the ropes towards the end and could only get to 142/9 in their allotted 20 overs. That total was never going to be enough to put pressure on a strong Indian batting line-up.

Top Four Help India Cruise To Victory

With no R Sharma in the side, KL Rahul and S Dhawan opened the innings and they put together a 71 run partnership before Rahul (45) departed. India decided to promote S Iyer up the order and he was joined by Kohli a couple of overs later as Dhawan (32) got out. Iyer (34) played well but got out a few runs short of victory.

V Kohli (30) played another unbeaten innings and helped India secure victory in the 18th over. Kohli was happy to start 2020 with a win and was full of praise for his side, especially his fast bowlers. N Saini was given the man of the match award for his great bowling performance.

Sri Lanka will not like starting out with a defeat but will want to make amends by winning the third and final T20 and drawing the series 1-1.
