Gautam Gambhir Questions Kohli’s Captaincy Skills Without R Sharma And MS Dhoni

Former opening batsman Gautam Gambhir has officially retired from all forms of cricketing including the Indian Premier League (IPL) and now pursues a full time role in politics with the ruling BJP.

Gambhir who is clearly not a fan of the Indian captain Virat Kohli once again took a couple of pot shots at Kohli’s captaincy. While Kohli fans will dismiss Gambhir’s comments as stemming from jealousy or his disklike for Kohli, there could be some truth to what the former left handed batsman had to say.

Kohli Not A Good Captain

Gambhir said Kohli has had a good run as captain at the international level because he has had top players like Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni contribute and make things easier for him. However, Kohli’s real leadership credentials can be seen in the IPL where his team the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have failed miserably season after season.

Gambhir points to the fact that Kohli and RCB have had little success in the IPL because his two key players in MS Dhoni and R Sharma are not in the squad. Without their assistance and contribution, Kohli seems like a fish out of water and RCB’s results under Kohli’s captaincy speaks for itself.

The Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL with Gambhir as captain so he does know what it takes first hand to win an IPL Championship. Gambhir went on to say that when you don’t have strong players in your team, it is then that a captain’s true leadership comes out and in this regard Kohli is yet to prove himself.

Gambhir regards Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni as better captains than Virat Kohli as both Sharma and Dhoni have led their respective franchises in the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings to IPL Championships. MS Dhoni has also led India to two World Cup ODI championships.

R Sharma Must Be In The Test Lineup

R Sharma who has been selected in the test squad to play against South Africa could be given an opportunity to open the batting. Gambhir says that R Sharma is too good a player to be selected in the squad of 15 and be kept on the bench.

KL Rahul who is a close friend of V Kohli has been given numerous chances to open but has failed. Gambhir believes its time for R Sharma to take Rahul’s place and establish himself in the test squad.
