Should The Selectors Give S Samson The Nod After R Pant Poor Form Continues

When R Pant was not selected in the initial 2019 ICC World Cup squad, there was a huge hue and cry from the public who felt that the selectors had not shown enough faith in Pant. Well Pant got his opportunity after V Shankar injured himself but Pant did not capitalize on the opportunity and disappointed everyone with his shot selection.

R Pant Might Need A Break

R Pant has been chosen as the main wicket-keeper batsman to represent India in all three formats of the game. With his attacking style and immense talent, he was thought to be the perfect replacement for MS Dhoni but his performances in the West Indies in both the T20 and ODI series has left much to be desired.

Pant has scores of 0, 4, 65, 20, 0 in his last five innings batting at number 4. That’s not good enough when you are playing at the highest level. While V Kohli backed Pant after the T20 series asking the public to give him more time, it is clear to see that Pant needs to work on both the technical and mental aspect of the game.

It is going to be very difficult for Pant to do that playing international cricket, which means it will be up to the selectors to make the decision to drop him. He will most likely get another opportunity during the first test and another failure could open the door for the experienced W Saha to make his return.

S Samson Should Be Given A Chance

The best teams in the world tend to have two wicket-keeper batsmen who are ready to play the shorter formats of the game. If you take England you have Butler and Bairstow, Australia have Wade and Carey while South Africa have Quinny de Kock and H Klaasen.

India no longer have the luxury of thinking MS Dhoni is going to be around forever which begs the question R Pant and who? The selectors have decided to close the door on D Karthik and rightly so given the number of opportunities he has had in the past.

S Samson is the ideal replacement as he has a great technique to play all forms of the game, immense talent and has shown that for a little man he has good hitting power. Even if R Pant continues to be the preferred choice, it is imperative that Samson gets an opportunity to be a proper backup if the Pant experiment fails!
