The 2019 IPL is getting close towards the half-way stage of the tournament and there is not much of a surprise in guessing which team sits on top of the IPL points table. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) who are the defending champions have won 5 out of their 6 games and are in first place with 10 points.
MS Dhoni – Still A Very Good Captain
CSK was expected to face their toughest test on Tuesday night when they took on the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) who were tied with CSK on 8 points going into the match. However, it turned out to be a pretty one sided match as CSK exerted their dominance immediately and bowled KKR out for just 108.
KKR should have collapsed for a lower total but Andre Russell continued his good form and made a fighting 50. CSK then chased down the total with caution to prove once again that they are the favorites and the team to beat at the 2019 IPL.
MS Dhoni who has led CSK since the start of the IPL has proven once again that he is still a very good captain. He has used his resources very well, made great tactical decisions, selected the right playing eleven and led from the front with the bat as well.
Dhoni At The Top While Kohli Remains At The Bottom
MS Dhoni and CSK are at the top of the IPL points table but languishing at the bottom are the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) led by Virat Kohli. This makes things very interesting for India as the 2019 ICC World Cup approaches.
RCB has lost 6 games in a row and Virat Kohli – the captain has looked dejected and clueless. There are some cricketing pundits like Michael Vaughan who has asked the BCCI to do Kohli and India a favour and put him on mandatory rest for the remainder of the IPL.
India needs a confident Kohli to lead at the 2019 World Cup. If RCB continue to lose and get eliminated before the playoffs, it will be very difficult for Kohli to shake-off, no matter how positive he can think or speak.
Some cricketing pundits have called for Kohli to be sacked as India captain and get Rohit Sharma to take over. However, given MS Dhoni’s performance at the IPL, would it be too much to ask for the BCCI to give Captain Marvel one more shot at taking India to a 2019 World Cup victory?
