Delhi Capitals Take Number One Spot And Qualify For 2019 IPL Playoffs

Most of the spotlight during the 2019 IPL so far has been on some of the more popular franchises like the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders. The Delhi Capitals have flown under the radar for the past few weeks but have now stolen the spotlight as they knocked CSK from the top spot on the IPL rankings and are now in first place.

Delhi Capitals have now officially qualified for the playoffs and the franchise is extremely happy with their performance as this is the first time in 6 years since they have reached the playoffs.

Capitals Take Top Spot With Win Over RCB

The Delhi Capitals knew that if they beat the struggling Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday night, they would go to the top of the group and qualify for the playoffs. They got the job done as they put up an impressive 187 runs and then restricted RCB to 171.

S Dhawan and S Iyer once again laid a solid platform with both batsmen reaching 50. Some lusty hitting towards the end by S Rutherford and A Patel gave the Capitals are formidable score.

The Delhi bowlers put in a strong performance as they took regular wickets to prevent RCB from running away. S Dhawan was given the man of the match award for his 50 of 37 balls and the Capitals will be hoping he continues his good run into the playoffs.

Capitals Getting It Done Without The Big Guns

The Capitals could end up losing their top spot to CSK later this week as both teams sit on 16 points each but the Charges are ahead due to a superior run rate. The Capitals have been impressive with both bat and ball even though they do not have many star studded players like some of the other franchises.

What has worked well for the Capitals is that S Iyer has led from the front by performing with the bat and then trusting his domestic players to deliver. K Rabada has been excellent in the bowling department but the likes of I Sharma, A Patel and A Mishra have made contributions when it mattered.

The Capitals have backed some of the lesser known international players like C Ingram, S Lamichhane and S Rutherford who have also made important contributions. For the Capitals to continue to be a dominant force at the 2019 IPL, they will need to continue to play the same brand of cricket and not let the occasion get the better of them!
