Shane Warne Tears Into R Ashwin For His Decision To ‘Mankad’ And Win Against Rajasthan Royals

Kings XI Punjab opened their IPL campaign against the Rajasthan Royals and knew they were up for a tough encounter as they were playing the Royals at home. Kings XI Punjab had never won a game at Jaipur against the Royals and were looking to break that jinx.

Kings XI ended up winning the match by 13 runs but they did so because their captain R Ashwin decided to ‘Mankad’ Jos Butler when the Royals were cruising. That decision changed the entire game and the Royals ended up losing 7 wickets in the last 4 overs to concede the match.

Shane Warne Has Harsh Comments For R Ashwin

Very rarely do you see a ‘Mankad’ taking place in cricket because it is considered to be an act that is in violation of the spirit of the game, even though it is permitted by the rule book. The IPL has a leaderboard for teams who display fair play and conduct themselves in the spirit of the game but clearly R Ashwin wasn’t too worried about this when he decided to remove J Butler in the 13th over.

Warne sent out a number of tweets on the issue and wasted no words in calling out R Ashwin and letting him know that he was a huge disappointment to the game. Here are a few tweets that the King of Spin put out.

“So disappointed in @ashwinravi99 as a Captain & as a person. All captains sign the #IPL wall & agree to play in the spirit of the game. RA had no intention of delivering the ball – so it should have been called a dead ball. Over to u BCCI – this a not a good look for the #IPL”

“Last point on the embarrassing & disgraceful act of @ashwinravi99 ! This win at all costs mentality has got to stop & the integrity of the game along with the spirit of the game must be of the most importance, as we need to set examples to the young boys & girls playing cricket !”

Ashwin Not Sorry For Mankad

R Ashwin played down his ‘Mankad’ incident and said Kings XI won because of a collective team effort. He said that if it is allowed by the rule books, then he does not see how the spirit of the game is being violated.

Royals coach Paddy Upton put things into perspective by saying R Ashwin’s actions and thoughts represent his beliefs. However, when he looked at the Kings XI squad, he did not really feel that they supported R Ashwin’s decision as a captain!
