India came so close to victory but yet finished on the losing side in the first test match against England. It was a very close match between the two sides and the margin of defeat was just 31 runs. We take a look at the performance of the Indian Eleven and rank them based on a 10 point scoring system.
M Vijay: Vijay scored 20 in the first innings and 6 in the second innings. He is in the squad as the first choice opener because of his technique and the ability to play the moving ball. He let the team down and gets 3 on 10.
S Dhawan: Dhawan was lucky to get selected but had a poor match, making 26 in the first innings and 13 in the second. He put down a number of catches in the slips that hurt India and allowed England to get off the hook on more than one occasion. He gets 3 on 10.
KL Rahul: was chosen ahead of C Pujara and he did nothing to justify the faith that the selectors showed in him. He got 4 in the first innings and 13 in the second innings and will be lucky if he retains his place in the second test. He gets 2 on 10.
V Kohli: The captain led from the front and silenced critics who wondered if he would be able to play Anderson and Broad. He scored a magnificent 149 in the first innings working with the tail and then scored a crucial 51 in the second innings. Despite his outstanding performance, Kohli will be disappointed that he did not stay and take India home. He gets 10 on 10.
A Rahane: The vice-captain had a forgettable match dropping a crucial catch and scoring 15 in the first innings and 2 in the second. When it really matters, you need your senior players stepping up and Rahane let his team and captain down. He gets 1 on 10.
D Karthik: playing in place of the injured W Saha, Karthik not only dropped multiple catches but also distracted his slip cordon from taking their catches. He scored 0 in the first and 20 in the second innings. He gets 2 on 10.
H Pandya: scored 22 in the first innings and 31 in the second innings. He did not take any wickets in the first innings and did not bowl in the second. Playing as an all-rounder, Pandya needs to contribute more. He gets 4 on 10.
R Ashwin: He took 7 wickets in the test match and scored a total of 23 runs. He gets 7 on 10.
M Shami: He took 3 wickets in the first innings and none in the second. He gets 4 on 10.
I Sharma: He took 1 wicket in the first innings and finished with a 5 wicket haul in the first innings. He gets 6 on 10.
