Indian Captain Sunil Chhetri Shines Yet Again To Help Win Intercontinental Cup 2018

India is a cricket loving nation and no other sport gets as much coverage or adoration as cricket. Football has a very small following in the land of 1.3 billion people but that is slowly changing as the Indian football team continue to do well and thrill its growing fan base in the country.

India Defeat Kenya In Finals

India played host to the Intercontinental Cup 2018 and played very well throughout the tournament to make it to the finals. Team India led by captain Sunil Chhetri took on a tough Team Kenya on Sunday at the Mumbai Football Arena which saw thousands of fans come to support the Indian team.

Kenya have played good football throughout the tournament and whitewashed Chinese Taipei 4-0 and surprised New Zealand with a 2-1 victory. The Indians took advantage of the home support and started the final in aggressive style and that paid great dividends for them as they managed to find the back of the net twice during the first half.

The Kenyan’s did their best to fight back but India defended very well during the second half and made no mistakes to clinch the final 2-0 and get their hands on the Intercontinental Cup 2018.

Sunil Chhetri Enters Record Books

Indian captain Sunil Chhetri has had a phenomenal tournament and he scored both goals in the finals. He led from the front as a captain should and showed why he is currently the best football player in India.

Chhetri who played his 102nd international match for India scored in the 8th and 29th minute and put the pressure completely on Kenya. He set new records for Team India as he has scored 8 out of the 11 goals during the tournament and now has a total of 64 international goals. This puts Chhetri in second place on the list of current international goal scorers.

Just to put that into perspective for Indian fans, Chhetri is now tied with Argentinean superstar Lionel Messi and only Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo is in front with 81 goals.

In a statement, Chhetri played down his accomplishments and said “”I am not taking that too seriously. There is no comparison (with Messi). I am a big fan (Messi) and happy scoring goals for the country. We want to win matches; we want to win trophies for the country. We are in the ascendancy right now. It’s just the start. Hope we could get more games and prepare for 2019 Asia Cup.”

The 2019 Asia Cup starts in January.
