Indian pacer Mohammed Shami was once considered a mainstay in India’s bowling attack. All that has changed in the last couple of years as a loss of form, personal problems and fitness concerns have made Shami look rather pedestrian when compared to some of the other quicks.
Shami has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in 2018 as his personal life and off-field drama has hogged the headlines rather than his on-field performances.
Shami To Miss Test Against Afghanistan
Mohammed Shami was named in the squad set to play Afghanistan in the one-off test this month. However, the Indian pacer has now been dropped from the squad after reportedly failing a fitness test on Monday at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore.
The news is that Shami was battling a strained hamstring and the selectors decided that it was better for him to sit out the one-off test, keeping in mind that India will play 5 tests in England, starting in August. India have called on fast bowler Navdeep Saini who took 34 wickets for Delhi in 8 games in the Ranji Trophy.
The news regarding Shami’s overall fitness is a bit sketchy. It is now mandatory for Indian players to pass the yo-yo test in order to be fit for selection. There is no confirmation as to whether Shami passed this test or failed the test. Whatever it is, it is not good news for Shami as he would have been keen to get on the field and let his performances speak before going to England.
Shami Jokes About Possible Second Marriage
Shami’s reputation was tainted earlier this year after his wife Hasin Jahan levelled allegations against him of abuse, intimidation and even match fixing. She recently alleged that Shami was planning to get married again after the Eid celebration.
In a statement, Shami addressed these new allegations in a light hearted manner and said “I am in much trouble due to my first marriage. Do you think I am mad that I will marry another girl? Hasin has brought a lot of allegations about me in last few months and this is an addition to that. That’s good, then I will invite her to be present at my second marriage.”
While he battles his personal problems, the Indian pacer admits that he hasn’t performed well during the last couple of months due to his off-field issues but promises things will be different in England.
