Afghanistan will be creating history when the country send’s its test team take on India in their first ever test match that is scheduled to take place in Bangalore from June 14. This is a one-off test match and the cricketing minnows having nothing to lose as they take on the number one test team in the world.
Afghanistan High On Confidence
Afghanistan are brimming with confidence as they just surprised Bangladesh in a T20 series and pulled of an astonishing series victory. Afghanistan whitewashed Bangladesh and will use the confidence gained from the shorter format of the game as they prepare to take on India at home.
Leg spinner Rashid Khan is the most recognizable face in the squad for Indian fans as he played throughout the 2018 IPL and will look to lead from the front. Afghanistan have selected as many as four spinners for the one-off test match and they will be looking to play fearlessly and give the Indians a surprise.
In a statement, Khan said “It’s a big achievement for us to get Full Membership and now playing Test cricket against India in India. It will be a very big day for us and the whole country to play the first Test against India in Bangalore. I’m really excited about that. Hopefully, we will give our best performance in that.”
Rahane Gets Another Chance To Lead
The BCCI announced well in advance that captain Virat Kohli will not be playing in the one-off test and Ajinkya Rahane will captain the side. Also missing in action will be regular wicket-keeper W Saha who recently pulled out with an injury and pacers J Bumrah and B Kumar who are being rested with the upcoming tour of England in mind. India are set to play 5 test matches in England and Bumrah and Kumar will have to send down a lot of overs.
Making their way back into the test squad is wicket-keeper D Karthik, pacer S Thakur, spinner K Yadav and batsman K Nair. It is highly unlikely that S Thakur and K Yadav make the eleven as India will go with the trusted pair of R Jadeja and R Ashwin. M Shami, I Sharma and U Yadav will battle it out as India will most likely play two seamers and use H Pandya in the all-rounder slot.
India go in as the overwhelming favourites but Afghanistan is confident that they can push this Indian team and pull of a surprise victory.
