Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opted to chase in the 2018 IPL Final and they did reasonably well in restricting the Sunrisers to 178. CSK had a slow start and looked to be in a spot of bother before Shane Watson took control of the innings and scored a magnificent century to help CSK win the 2018 IPL Championship.
Williamson And Pathan Deliver For Sunrisers
If the Sunrisers were going to do well in the finals, captain Kane Williamson had to come good with the bat and he did. Williamson made 47 of 36 balls and received support from Y Pathan who hit 45 at a strike rate of 180. The innings gained momentum towards the end as West Indian all-rounder C Brathwaite hit 21 of 11 balls to get Sunrisers to 178.
The Sunrisers were severe on D Bravo who is usually economically and took him for 46 runs of his 4 overs. For CSK, DL Chahar and L Ngidi bowled tidily and put the breaks on the Sunrisers. A total of 178 was always going to be a tough for CSK considering that the Sunrisers have the best bowling line-up in the tournament.
Watson Brilliance Gives CSK Victory
CSK got off to a slow start as they lost the wicket of Faf du Plessis in the 4th over and Watson and Raina decided to consolidate. Watson decided to make up for the slow start and was in a belligerent move as he scored a fantastic century to take his team over the line.
Watson hit 8 sixes and 7 fours at a strike rate in excess of 200 and remained unbeaten on 117. The Sunrisers for once did not have an answer to Watson’s power and CSK easily chased down the total. Watson had help from Suresh Raina who scored 32 from 24 balls and A Rayudu who scored 17 and remained unbeaten, finishing the tournament as CSK’s highest run scorer.
With this championship victory, CSK has cemented itself as the most popular IPL franchise in the league and MS Dhoni has done a fine job once again in leading CSK after a two year suspension. CSK franchise owners did their best to keep the core team together and not experiment as some of the other franchises have done. That decision proved critical in the end as the 2018 IPL Championship victory was a complete team effort throughout the tournament.
