After a positive start to the tournament, it seemed as though Kings XI Punjab were destined for a rare appearance in the IPL play offs but a run of mixed results leaves that equation in some doubt. They slip out of the top four after that heavy defeat to RCB on Monday and some poor cricket leaves them vulnerable in this crucial fixture.
Mumbai have recovered after a typical slow start for the defending champions but Rohit Sharma’s team will need to keep winning from here and hope that other results can go their way.
Mumbai are playing the better cricket right now and are worthy favourites in our opinion at 1.70 with Betfair while Kings XI Punjab’s dip in form leaves them as outsiders at 2.20 with Betway. We’ve been saying for a while that KXIP had been relying too heavily on one or two players but they had been carried by KL Rahul as his runs kept them inside the top four.
When their openers had gone early against Bangalore, the rest of the batting crumbled and we think they are likely to go down again to an improving Mumbai Indians whose varied bowling attack holds the key to this game.
Match Odds Summary: Mumbai Indians 1.70 (Betfair – Editor’s Pick), Kings XI Punjab 2.20 (Betway).
While Suryakumar Yadav has enjoyed a productive tournament, his opening partner Evin Lewis has started to come good and suddenly, Mumbai are playing to their batting potential. For Wednesday’s game, Yadav is the favourite to top score for his side at 3.75 with Betfair while Lewis looks generous in comparison at 4.25 with Betway.
Rohit Sharma endured a first ball dismissal against Rajasthan last time out but will attract interest at odds of 4.50 with Betfair while, as always, there is a lot of value in Mumbai’s middle order. Hardik Pandya is listed at 9.00 and Kieron Pollard at 12.00, both with Betfair, while Krunal Pandya is way out at 23.00 with Betway.
For Kings XI Punjab, Chris Gayle starts as favourite despite a lower run of scores and you can pick up the West Indian at 3.25 with (Betway). KL Rahul offers good value by comparison at 3.75 with Betfair while Aaron Finch, who top scored in a low total against RCB, is on offer at 5.50 with Betfair again.
Outside of those three, there may be little threat to this market but other picks include Karun Nair at 6.00 with Betway and Mayank Agarwal at 7.00 with Betway again.
From the two teams, we’re taking Rohit Sharma as an overall pick to top score for Mumbai. The skipper’s form has been mixed but his class is permanent and he’s sure to regain his touch very soon.
Top Batsman Odds Summary: Mumbai Indians: Yadav 3.75 (Betfair), Lewis 4.25 (Betway), Rohit 4.50 (Betfair – Editor’s Pick), Hardik Pandya 9.00 (Betfair), Pollard 12.00 (Betfair), Krunal Pandya 23.00 (Betway).
Kings XI Punjab: Gayle 3.25 (Betway), Rahul 3.75 (Betfair), Finch 5.50 (Betfair), Nair 6.00 (Betway), Agarwal 7.00 (Betway).
Other Side Bets
Kings XI Punjab somehow managed to win the Most Sixes market despite making just 88 against the Royal Challengers so we could perhaps consider them for this bet once again. For Wednesday’s game, the bookies can’t split the teams with both KXIP and Mumbai available at the same price of 2.00 with Betfair.
There’s value in either team there but instead we will finish with Kings XI’s Top Bowler market where it’s been a productive campaign for Andrew Tye. The Aussie is really getting into rhythm with his variations and even took four wickets with respectable figures in the face of KKR’s onslaught at the weekend.
We’ll list some other options below but Tye is the pick at odds of 4.00 with Betfair.
Kings XI Punjab Top Bowler Odds Summary: Tye 4.00 (Betfair – Editor’s Pick), Ashwin 5.00 (Betway), Rajpoot 5.00 (Betfair), Mohit Sharma 5.50 (Betway), Axar Patel 7.00 (Betway).
Andrew Tye is a key player for Kings XI Punjab on Wednesday but their woeful batting has led to a big slide in form and we expect Mumbai to take advantage and take the points.
