Victory over the Delhi Daredevils puts Chennai back on top of the table and they will remain at the summit when these two teams take to the field at Eden Gardens on Thursday. CSK look almost certain to make the play offs now but this game is more of a ‘must win’ for the Knight Riders who are currently among a clutch of teams fighting for fourth place.
The Super Kings are the form team but what are the bookies telling us ahead of the toss?
The result market is actually tighter than many would expect with many bookmakers having the same win price down for both teams. Elsewhere, CSK are the slight favourites at 1.90 with Betway while Kolkata are only slightly further back at odds of 1.95 with Betfair.
The Knight Riders have mixed form but they have recorded some impressive performances and are improving so there is a threat. The problem is that there are so many key wickets and even when bowlers work through Chennai’s top order they have MS Dhoni walking in who seems almost impossible to dismiss.
The Super Kings’ bowling is more of a concern but that depth of batting should see them home.
Match Odds Summary: Kolkata Knight Riders: 1.95 (Betfair), Chennai Super Kings 1.90 (Betway – Editor’s Pick).
KKR have been boosted by Chris Lynn’s return to form and thankfully for supporters, the injury-prone Australian has stayed fit so far. Lynn starts as the favourite to top score for the Knight Riders at 3.60 with Betway while Robin Uthappa follows at 4.50 with Betway again. We’ve not seen the best of Uthappa yet but he is due a return to form and 4.50 is a decent price.
Other options for Kolkata include Nitish Rana at 6.00, Dinesh Karthik at 7.50 and Andre Russell at 9.00, all with Betfair, while the pinch hitter Sunil Narine is available at 7.00 with Betway.
Shane Watson survived a tight LBW review from the first ball of the match against Delhi before top scoring with 78 but there are plenty of options in CSK’s top batsman market. Watson is favourite with most bookies but the Aussie is generous out at 4.50 with Betway. Suresh Raina starts with the shortest price of 4.00 with Betfair while the in-form Ambati Rayudu follows at 4.50 with Betfair again.
Other options for Chennai include Faf Du Plessis at 5.00 with Betway and Sam Billings at 6.00 with Betfair while there’s obviously going to be interest in Dhoni out at 7.00 with Betfair again.
We mentioned that Uthappa held a good price for KKR at 4.50 but our overall tip for this game is Rayudu who is in better form, competing for the Orange Cap, and equally good value at those same odds.
Top Batsman Odds Summary: Kolkata Knight Riders: Lynn 3.60 (Betway), Uthappa 4.50 (Betway), Rana 6.00 (Betfair), Narine 7.00 (Betway), Karthik 7.50 (Betfair), Russell 9.00 (Betfair)
Chennai Super Kings: Raina 4.00 (Betfair), Watson 4.50 (Betway), Rayudu 4.50 (Betfair – Editor’s Pick), Du Plessis 5.00 (Betway), Billings 6.00 (Betfair), Dhoni 7.00 (Betfair).
Other Side Bets
Shane Watson scored the second hundred of IPL 11 and looked on course to double up before his dismissal on Monday. With some prolific run accumulators on both sides, it could therefore be time to look at Betway’s odds of 7.00 on any player to score a century in this match.
Instead, we’ll finish with a tip at much smaller odds but one that carries some value. The Super Kings are favourites at 1.72 with Betfair to provide the highest opening partnership of the match while KKR are second at a generous 2.10 with Betfair again.
This could be a real gamble when you have Sunil Narine opening the batting but he’s been surprisingly consistent and with Chris Lynn finding form, the Knight Riders look a strong option. Chennai’s greater batting depth should see them win the match but hopefully this is a profitable tip to round off Thursday’s match.
Highest Opening Partnership Odds Summary: Kolkata Knight Riders 2.10 (Betfair – Editor’s Pick), Chennai Super Kings 2.10 (Betfair), The Tie 41.00 (Betfair).
