The 2018 IPL has not gone down very well for the Delhi Daredevils franchise as the Daredevils have played 6 games so far and lost 5 of them, leaving them at the bottom of the 2018 IPL points table.
Daredevils On The Verge of Being Eliminated
The Daredevils had a great opportunity on Monday to shake off their poor performances and secure their second win of the tournament as they had Kings XI Punjab on the mat after restricting them to just 143 thanks to some great bowling. However, the Daredevils had yet another battling collapse and ended up losing by 4 runs.
The defeat was a bitter pill to swallow for captain Gautam Gambhir and the rest of the squad as they realize that they have to win every game going forward to stand a chance of making the play-offs. That is going to be a tall task for Delhi, given the fact that their confidence will be low and they will be under a lot of pressure in their remaining games.
Was Gambhir The Wrong Choice?
The 2018 IPL campaign is more or less over for the Delhi Daredevils but they will be hoping to win a few games and give their fans something to cheer about. The franchise owners will also have to introspect as to where they went wrong as the Daredevils look flat.
Delhi made a big decision when they decided to buy the discarded KKR captain Gautam Gambhir and appoint him as captain. Gambhir is at the end of his career and at best has one more IPL left. The concern that the owners will have is that they don’t have a good replacement for Gambhir and hence don’t really have the option of dropping him in the middle of the 2018 IPL and giving someone else the chance to lead and turn around the fortunes of the Daredevils franchise.
Gambhir has struggled with the bat and his failures have been further highlighted due to the fact that Delhi’s overseas players have also failed to perform. Delhi does not have a lot of replacements to keep tinkering with their squad. Their next match is against Gambhir’s old franchise the Kolkata Knight Riders on April 27.
Gambhir will not go down without a fight and will look to lead from the front. However, if things don’t work out against KKR, the Daredevils will be eliminated from the 2018 IPL.
