Chennai Super Kings won their first two matches of the 2018 IPL by the skin of their teeth as some last ball heroics helped CSK register a 2-0 lead. They were put in tough positions in both matches due to some weird decision making skills for CSK captain MS Dhoni.
Dhoni Underutilizes Overseas Players On Sunday
CSK took on Kings XI Punjab at Mohali on Sunday and Kings XI got off to a tremendous start as KL Rahul and Chris Gayle flayed the CSK attack to all parts of the ground. Dhoni kept going back to DL Chahar who sent down 3 overs for 37 runs with an economy rate of over 12.
Chahar has been expensive in previous matches so one has to ask why Dhoni kept persisting with the domestic pacer who looked like he had no answers to Kings XI. Veteran all-rounder Shane Watson sent down 2 overs for just 15 runs and picked up the crucial wicket of Gayle but Dhoni decided not to bowl him out.
Dhoni would later go on to make another strange decision during CSK’s chase of 197. Considering CSK was behind on the run rate when A Raydu fell in the 14th over, one would have thought D Bravo would have walked to the crease as he had shown in the previous game how destructive he can be with the bat.
However R Jadeja who is a favorite of MS Dhoni decided to walk out and ended up slowing things down scoring 19 out of 13 balls with a strike rate of 140. MS Dhoni did his best to chase down the total but it was too much for just one batsman to handle. D Bravo remained unbeaten having faced just one ball and CSK fell short by 5 runs.
Dhoni Wants To Turn Jadeja Into A Finish
MS Dhoni was asked about his strange decision to keep sending Jadeja ahead of Bravo and he justified it by saying that coach S Fleming could change things up if he wanted to. Dhoni says his plan is to turn Jadeja into a finisher as he believes he has what it takes to get the job done.
In a statement, MS Dhoni said “Unless we give him an opportunity; so far we have never really given him the kind of opportunity that he really deserves, so I will definitely back him to come good in the coming games.”
CSK’s has a nice break to rethink their strategy as their next match is against the Rajasthan Royals on April 20 in Pune.
