Christopher Henry Gayle, Christ Gayle or the Universe Boss as he likes to call himself was not selected in the first draft of the 2018 IPL. Gayle had not been in the greatest of form leading up to the 2018 IPL and his previous IPL run in 2017 was not very spectacular.
Gayle Rewards Kings XI Punjab For Their Faith
Kings XI Punjab decided to take a leap of faith and acquire the hard hitting West Indian opening batsman for the 2018 IPL after Royal Challenges Bangalore said goodbye to him. Kings XI did not play Gayle in their opening 2018 IPL match but coach Virender Sehwag decided that Gayle was too good a player not to give him an opportunity.
Gayle played his first match against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 15 and showed that he is still one of the best T20 players in the world hitting 63 of just 33 balls at a strike rate of over 190. Kings XI played Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday and Gayle picked off where he left off against CSK.
The Universe Boss took the game away from the Sunrisers with an unbeaten century that included 11 sixes and just 1 four. Gayle scored more than 50 percent of his teams total and took them to 193 which was a little too much for the Sunrisers to chase down.
Gayle Says Sehwag Has Saved IPL By Selecting Him
Gayle was awarded the player of the match for notching up his 6th IPL ton. He had some interesting comments during his post-match interview and said that when Kings XI picked him up, coach Sehwag said that if Gayle won the franchise two games, then Kings XI had spent their money well. Gayle said he wanted to have a chat with Sehwag about that statement as clearly the Universe boss believes he has a lot more left in him.
In a statement, Gayle said “I’m always determined, wherever I go in the world and whichever franchise I represent. A lot of people said ‘Chris has a point to prove.’ Virender Sehwag has saved the IPL by picking me. I’m glad to be able to get 100 here today. I’m going to miss this wicket to be honest. Time waits for no one but I’m not here to prove anything to be anyone. I just want to move on, enjoy my cricket.”
