The Indian team just got back from a gruelling but rather successful two month tour of South Africa. The men in blue will have no time for rest and relaxation as the BCCI will be sending them to neighbouring Sri Lanka to compete in a tri-series for the Nidahas Trophy.
BCCI Rests Top Guns
The BCCI decided to rest some of the top players as they were badly in need of a rest. Captain Virat Kohli and former captain MS Dhoni will not be a part of the series. They also decided to rest all-rounder H Pandya and bowlers J Bumrah and B Kumar who had a heavy workload in South Africa. K Yadav is also missing out but that is because he is injured. R Sharma will captain the side yet again and his deputy will be opening partner S Dhawan.
Even though India will be weakened by the absence of a number of senior players, they still go in as the favourites. The T20 tri-series will see each team play each other twice starting from March 6 and the top two teams will play each other in the final which will take place on March 18.
Chance For Young Players To Shine
Six players who made the ODI side against South Africa will not be a part of the side and this gives a number of young players the chance to play a few games on the trot. It is very rare for young players to get an extended run in the Indian side and they will be keen to make a mark for themselves.
Some of these players have already represented India but have been in and out of the side. The likes of KL Rahul, D Hooda, R Pant, D Karthik and M Pandey will have to deliver with the bat and strengthen the middle-order. The bowlers who will have to step up include J Unadkat, M Siraj, S Thakur and A Patel. India have called on all-rounders Vijay Shankar and Washington Sundar to fill the H Pandya gap and it will be interesting to see how they perform.
This is also another opportunity for R Sharma to find form as he had a poor South African tour. Suresh Raina has also been recalled to the T20 squad and he could end up being a key factor as he is in good form. The entire series will be played at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo and it should be a batsman’s paradise.
