The start of the Nidahas Trophy Tri-Series didn’t go according to plan for stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma and his Indian team but having rested key players, the side was always going to be vulnerable against a Sri Lankan unit that was close to full strength.
India now stay in Colombo where they will face Bangladesh on Thursday with Rohit and his men needing a quick turnaround.
India are favourites to get their first win on the board here and can be backed at odds of 1.40 with Betway. Bangladesh, who are playing their first game of the tournament, can therefore be picked up as the outside bet at 3.40 with Betfair.
The Bangladeshis are without Shakib Al Hasan but, like the Sri Lankans, will be close to fielding their best team. For India, their total of 174/5 on Tuesday should have been a competitive one so it’s the bowlers that need to improve here. That market could be closer and India could be under pressure again but a better performance from that bowling unit should lead to a first win.
Match Odds: India 1.40 (Betway – Editor’s Pick), Bangladesh 3.40 (Betfair).
At least we took an overall profit from Tuesday’s game by backing Shikhar Dhawan to top score for India and the left hander could be an option again at 3.75 with Betway. Skipper Rohit starts as favourite in this market at 3.60 with Betway while Suresh Raina is further back at 4.00, also with Betway. Manish Pandey and Rishabh Pant gave some support in the late overs against Sri Lanka but were a little slow at the death.
For Thursday against Bangladesh, Pandey is on offer at 5.50 and Pant at 6.50 and once again, those prices are with Betway.
Moving on to Bangladesh and Tamim Iqbal starts things off at 3.50 with Mushfiqur Rahim close behind at 3.75. There are some good options for this market in the middle order and you can pick up the dangerous Soumya Sarkar at 4.75 while both Liton Das and Mahmudullah are available at 5.50. All of those numbers are with Betway.
As for an overall tip, it’s tempting to stick with Shikhar Dhawan after his brilliant 90 but while Suresh Raina scored 1, we expect him to improve and make the major contribution in this fixture.
Top Batsman Odds Summary: India: Rohit 3.60 (Betway), Dhawan 3.75 (Betway), Raina 4.00 (Betway – Editor’s Pick), Pandey 5.50 (Betway), Pant 6.50 (Betway).
Bangladesh: Tamim Iqbal 3.50 (Betway), Mushfiqur 3.75 (Betway), Sarkar 4.75 (Betway), Das 5.50 (Betway), Mahmudullah 5.50 (Betway).
Other Side Bets
With this kind of series where the games have a fast turnaround, the bookmakers are usually quite slow in putting their prices up so we have quite a restricted set of side markets for this game.
Of the options that are available, we could look at India’s top bowler where our tip for the Sri Lanka game, Yuzvendra Chahal, took two wickets but was eased out by Washington Sundar who was more economical.
Chahal starts as favourite again at 3.25 with Betway with Jaydev Unadkat at 3.75 and Sundar at 4.00 – both with Betway. Instead, we’ll try the Man of the Match betting where our strategy of picking the best batsman has often paid off.
Rohit and Dhawan start as joint favourites here at 8.00 with Betway while Tamim Iqbal is the first Bangladeshi name on the list at 13.00 with Betway again. However, as we’re backing Suresh Raina to make the major contribution with the bat he is our tip here at 10.00, also with Betway.
Man of the Match Odds Summary: Rohit 8.00 (Betway), Dhawan 8.00 (Betway), Raina 10.00 (Betway – Editor’s Pick), Tamim 13.00 (Betway),
Following Tuesday’s game, some will consider Sri Lanka as favourites to take the Nidahas Trophy. India’s remaining squad have to lift themselves and while that loss may be an issue moving forward, we do expect Rohit’s men to come through against Bangladesh.
