Wrist Spinners Bamboozle South Africa To Give India Another Comfortable Victory

India won the toss and asked South Africa to bat first at Centurion. The South Africans were without captain Faf du Plessis who sustained a fractured finger in the first ODI and will not play the remainder of the series. Young A Markram was selected to lead the Proteas and his first match as captain is one that he will not want to remember.

South Africa Struggling Against Wrist Spin

B Kumar struck first and took the key wicket of H Amla. The South Africans were finding it hard to score and things got a lot tougher for them once Virat Kohli decided to bowl his wrist spinners. Y Chahal and K Yadav ran through the South Africans in the first ODI and they did exactly that in the second ODI as well.

Y Chahal was the pick of the bowlers and picked up a 5 wicket haul while K Yadav chipped in with 3 wickets. The two wrist spinners sent down a total of 14.2 overs, gave away just 42 runs and picked up 8 wickets to bowl South Africa out for just 118.

India had a very modest total to chase and they had no problems in chasing down the total. R Sharma fell early but S Dhawan and Virat Kohli stitched a partnership together to help India secure a 2-0 lead in the 6 match series. The third ODI is scheduled to take place on Feb 7 at Newlands.

South Africa Have To Win Remaining 4 Matches

South Africa will have to win the remaining 4 matches if they are to win the series. This is going to be a massive challenge for the Proteas as they will have to do it without Faf. The good news for them is that AB de Villiers is expected to return during the 4th ODI.

What South Africa will have to address quickly is how they are going to contend with the wrist spin of Y Chahal and K Yadav. The batsmen look completely clueless and are trying to read the turn from off the pitch. If they continue to struggle, this series could turn out to be very one sided.

South Africa will also be concerned with the form of Q de Kock. The hard hitting opener struggled in the test series and continues to struggle in the ODI format. If he fails in the third ODI, the Proteas might have to think about making a change to the top of the order.
