Sri Lanka’s tour to India has been horrendous as they were completely outplayed in the test series. Indian and Sri Lankan cricket fans were hoping that the 3 match ODI series would be a lot more competitive and Sri Lanka started on the right note winning the first ODI in Dharamsala.
India came back hard in the second ODI with stand-in captain Rohit Sharma hitting a double century and helping India tie the series 1-1. The third ODI in Visakhapatnam was a virtual final and India were under pressure to win at home.
New Spin Twins Rip Through Lankan Batting
India won the toss and asked Sri Lanka to bat. Former captain U Tharanga played a great innings after losing his opening partner in the 4th over. Tharanga (95) and Samarawickrama (42) put together a century partnership and gave the Lankans a great platform as Tharanga scored at a strike rate of 115. At the 25 over mark, Sri Lanka had 150 on the board and were set to get a score in excess of 300.
The Indian selectors have opted to use R Jadeja and R Ashwin in test matches and select K Yadav and Y Chahal for ODI and T20 matches. The new spin twins ripped through the Lankans sending down a combined 20 overs for 88 runs and picking 6 wickets in total. Both Y Chahal and K Yadvav took 3 wickets a piece and it was Yadav who got the wicket of Tharanga. The Sri Lankans were only able to post a total of 215 and that was never going to be enough.
Dhawan Century Takes India To Comfortable Win
India lost R Sharma (7) in the fourth over and made scoring difficult for S Dhawan and young SS Iyer. However due to the small total, both batsmen were able to take their time to play themselves in before launching an attack. SS Iyer looked in good form and could have gone on to score his first ODI century but he threw his wicket away when he was on 65.
S Dhawan made sure he stayed till the end and brought up another ODI century in partnership with D Karthick. India chased down the runs in the 33rd over and set up another ODI series victory. They will now prepare for the three match T20 series against Sri Lanka.
