We expected India to bounce back after an opening defeat in this series and they did it in some style in Mohali. Rohit Sharma’s incredible record in this format continued with his third ODI Double Ton and Sri Lanka were never in the game, chasing an improbable 393 to win.
The teams now move on to Visakhapatnam for Sunday’s decider and that recent victory has just strengthened India’s position as pre-match favourites.
With 48 hours on the clock before the game starts we have India some way out in front at best odds of 1.25 with Betfair for the win while Sri Lanka remain an outside option at 4.33 with Betway. We know from the first game that the tourists can give us some value at that price but can they recover after Mohali?
All the attention was on Rohit Sharma after that brilliant double hundred but there were good contributions from Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer so there’s plenty of batters finding their form right now. Angelo Mathews hit an unbeaten ton in reply and he is always a danger but it’s hard to ignore form and momentum and we expect India to take this decider.
Match Odds Summary: India 1.25 (Betfair – Editor’s Pick), Sri Lanka 4.33 (Betway).
Among Rohit’s achievements last time out was a nice profit for us in India’s top batsman market so maybe we should stick with the skipper at decent odds of 3.60 with Betfair. Naturally there are alternatives with Shikhar Dhawan in form and available at 4.33 with Betfair and Ajinkya Rahane at 5.00 with Betfair again. Shreyas Iyer at 5.50 is another man in good touch ahead of this game and he is available at 5.50 while MS Dhoni at 8.50 and Hardik Pandya at 14.00 provide the value down the order. Once again, those prices are all with Betfair.
Mathews was the preference for us in Mohali and has been a stand out for Sri Lanka in recent times. The all rounder goes off in his side’s top batsman market at 4.50 along with Upul Tharanga, both with Betfair. Lahiru Thirimanne and Kusal Perera are further options at 5.50 with Betfair while Niroshan Dickwella looks a good value punt for us at 6.50 with Betfair again.
We’ll stay, as always with India for our tip and while it’s tempting to opt for Rohit again, we just feel that Shikhar Dhawan is due a big score and has the form to convert to a century and beyond.
Top Batsman Odds Summary: India: Sharma 3.60 (Betfair), Dhawan 4.33 (Betfair – Editor’s Pick), Rahane 5.00 (Betfair), Iyer 5.50 (Betfair), Dhoni 8.50 (Betfair), Pandya 14.00 (Betfair).
Sri Lanka: Mathews 4.50 (Betfair). Tharanga 4.50 (Betfair), Thirimanne 5.50 (Betfair), Perera 5.50 (Betfair), Dickwella 6.50 (Betfair).
Other Side Bets
Out top bowler punt on Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the only tip that let us down in the second game but we could revisit that as Bhuvi has some value as second favourite, along with Yuzvendra Chahal at best odds of 4.33 with Betfair.
The bookies really like Jasprit Bumrah right now but he’s short for us at 3.50 with Betfair again so we’re going to look elsewhere.
The Man of the Match betting has been quite kind to us in recent times and while Rohit Sharma starts as favourite at 6.00 with Betfair, we’ll round off by getting behind Shikhar Dhawan again at 7.00 with Betfair.
Man of the Match Odds Summary: Sharma 6.00 (Betfair), Dhawan 7.00 (Betfair – Editor’s Pick), Pandya 11.00 (Betfair), Mathews 11.00 (Betfair), Tharanga 11.00 (Betfair), Dhoni 17.00 (Betfair).
While India may not get quite as close to 400 as they did last time out, we still expect their batters to dominate and having answered those critics who suggested they can’t play without Captain Kohli, they should play with even greater freedom and seal a 2-1 series win.
