We expected India to be stung into action following their opening defeat to the touring Kiwis and they duly delivered in Pune, completing a comfortable run chase at the end of the 46th over.
Half centuries from Shikhar Dhawan and Dinesh Karthik got the hosts over the line after the Indian seamers had done their job and it sets us up nicely at 1-1 going into Sunday’s decider.
After controversy in Pune, we are now in Kanpur but leaving questions of the surface aside, the result market is a predictable one. India lead the way and can currently be picked up at best odds of 1.36 with Betfair while the price on a New Zealand victory stands at 3.40 with Bet365.
We know that this Kiwi side can be dangerous but we’ve also seen that the batting order lacks depth after some key retirements. If, as India did on Wednesday, they can get 3-4 wickets down early then they will clinch the series and with a number of touring batters out of form right now we expect them to do just that.
Match Odds Summary: India 1.36 (Betfair – Editor’s Pick) New Zealand 3.40 (Bet365).
After Virat Kohli shone in a losing cause in the first game, runs were shared around the team in Pune but naturally the skipper remains favourite in his side’s top batsman market at best odds of 3.60 with Bet365. Rohit Sharma follows at 4.00 with Bet365 while Shikhar Dhawan is slightly further back at 4.33 with Betfair and Betway.
Further down the list, Dinesh Karthik has enjoyed a solid series and he will tempt many at an excellent best price of 9.50 with Betfair while further value could be picked up with MS Dhoni at 10.00 with Bet365 and Betway and Hardik Pandya at 13.00 with Betfair.
We’ve been behind Rohit for the first two games and while he could well come through on Sunday, we feel that Shikhar Dhawan is the better option at a good price.
For New Zealand, Kane Williamson’s form has been an issue but the captain is a key wicket and that’s why he remains favourite to score most Kiwi runs at 3.75 with Betway. Martin Guptill follows on at best odds of 4.50 with Bet365 and Betway while Ross Taylor offers some decent value at a tempting 5.00 with Bet365.
Outside punts in the New Zealand camp include Tom Latham at 7.00 and Henry Nicholls at 9.00. Both of those figures are with Bet365.
We expect Williamson to make a better contribution in Kanpur but Dhawan is our overall pick from the two sides.
Top Batsmen Odds Summary: India Kohli 3.60 (Bet365), Sharma 4.00 (Bet365), Dhawan 4.33 (Betway – Editor’s Pick), Karthik 9.50 (Betfair), Dhoni 10.00 (Bet365), Pandya 13.00 (Betfair).
New Zealand: Williamson 3.75 (Betway), Guptill 4.50 (Bet365), Taylor 5.00 (Bet365), Latham 7.00 (Bet365), Nicholls 9.00 (Bet365).
Other Side Bets
We were tempted by the individual century bet for the game in Pune and while this didn’t land, odds of 1.61 may be a good option for the third ODI on Sunday. However, we will switch back to another old favourite and at the risk of repeating ourselves, we’re backing Bhuvneshwar Kumar to return best figures for India in this match.
The seamers were key for the home side and while Bhuvi returned best figures in Pune, he is out once again at a top price of 4.50 with Bet365 and Betway. That’s great value in a market where Jasprit Bumrah is a much shorter favourite at 3.60 with Bet365 so we’ll round off with that tip.
Top Indian Bowler Odds Summary: Bumrah 3.60 (Bet365), Kumar 4.50 (Bet365 – Editor’s Pick), Chahal 4.50 (Bet365), Yadav 5.00 (Betway), Pandya 6.00 (Bet365).
India’s bowlers should set things up for a strong batting line up and while this New Zealand side can always be competitive, the greater depth in the hosts’ squad should lead to a 2-1 series victory in Kanpur.
