Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar who is also doing commentary for the India – Australia ODI series has heaped praise on the current Indian cricket team led by captain Kohli after they secured another series win on September 24, when they defeated Australia to click the 5 match ODI series 3-0.
Since Virat Kohli took over the captaincy (Dec 2016) from MS Dhoni in all three formats, the boys in blue have had great results in all formats of the game. India is now the number one test team and ODI team based on the ICC rankings and according to Gavaskar has the potential to be the best ODI team India has ever produced.
Greatest Indian ODI Team
In a statement, Gavaskar said “I think by the time this team finishes, I think it is going to go down as the greatest Indian one-day team ever. Because the balance is so good. The batting is right down to number 8 or 9. You have bowlers who can bowl, whatever, whenever they are asked and therefore, I think you take all aspects into consideration and you know that this is a really, really special team, captained by a very special player.”
India have won ODI series against England, West Indies, Sri Lanka and now Australia. They have now won 9 ODI’s on the trot and captain Kohli has urged his team to be ruthless in the remaining 2 ODIs against Australia and look for another series whitewash.
Australia Not As Strong As Before
Off-spinner Harbajahan Singh who had epic battles with the Australians over the years, criticized the current Australian team stating that they weren’t one of the weakest Australian teams he had seen and could not be compared to the past teams that featured the likes of Matthew Hayden, Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Michael Hussey and Michael Clarke.
Michael Hussey and Michael Clarke are currently doing commentary along with Sunil Gavaskar. Harbajahan tweeted Clarke and asked him to come out of retirement and help the Aussies turn things around – an invitation that Clarke politely declined.
While it is true that Australia is not as strong as before, Captain Kohli will know that the Aussies will not go down without a fight and they will play for pride in the next two ODI’s. Kohli has promised to experiment and try new players but he will want to win 5-0 and send a strong message to the Australians.
