India now holds the number one ranking for the ICC Test Team and the ICC ODI team. The number one ranking is credit to their performances in both formats of the game during the last 12 months. India won the third ODI at Indore on Sunday to win the 5 match series against Australia 3-0.
Australia Continue To Struggle
The Australians put up a better fight in the third ODI as Aaron Finch (124) returned to the openers slot and hit a century. Captain Steven Smith and Vice-captain David Warner also made significant contributions and at one stage it looked like Australia would get close to 350 on a relatively flat track.
However India managed to restrict Australia to just 59 runs of the last 10 overs and keep the total to just 293. Australia would have been disappointed at the way they finished the innings as they knew they were about 30-40 runs short. They did themselves no favors in the field as they also dropped to crucial catches, giving Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya second lives.
Sharma (71), Rahane (70) and Pandya (78) scored at a brisk rate and always ensured that India were ahead of the run rate. Australia’s had an opportunity to run through the Indian batting line-up when they lost Sharma, Rahane and Kohli in a short span but Pandya who was promoted to number 4, anchored the innings and was severe on left arm spinner A Agar. He took India to a winning position before getting out. India chased down the runs with 13 balls to spare and have now won 9 ODI’s on the trot.
Pandya Doing A Great Job As All-Rounder
Pandya was named man of the match yet again in the series. He is clearly the brightest prospect in India cricket at the moment and what will be particularly encouraging to the selectors is his temperament. Pandya said that he was happy to get the opportunity to bat higher up the order and the next time he has the opportunity he will make sure he stays till the end and finishes the match. Apart from his performance with the bat, he also sent down 10 overs for 58 runs and took the crucial wicket of David Warner.
India have named its squad for the remaining two ODI’s and S Dhawan has been left out along with R Jadeja as Axar Patel has returned from injury. The fourth ODI takes place on September 28 in Bangalore.
