It’s hard to recall a series that has been so one-sided and the first two tests here have underlined just how far Sri Lanka need to come back following the retirement of some of their top players. India have been so dominant that it’s hard to see a way back for the hosts who may well have to wait until the limited overs matches before becoming competitive.
As for now, let’s see if we can find some value in any of the markets ahead of the third test, starting in Pallekele on Saturday.
The outright result betting keeps getting shorter here with India now best priced to win this game at 1.53 with Betway. A victory for Sri Lanka comes in at best odds of 11.00 with either Bet365 or Betfair while you can also pick up the draw at 3.30 with Betfair again.
Once again the weather forecasters have given us a rather gloomy picture for the next few days but having got it wrong for the first two tests you could probably ignore it and any chance it may have on forcing a draw. It’s true that India will be without Ravi Jadeja who was Man of the Match last time out but it’s India’s batters that are making the bigger difference between the two sides and we can’t see that situation changing.
Match Odds Summary: Sri Lanka 11.00 (Bet365), The Draw 3.30 (Betfair), India 1.53 (Betway – Editor’s Pick).
We took a profit on Cheteshwar Pujara in Colombo having tipped the player for the first two games and he now becomes joint favourite to top score for India on first innings next time around. Pujara is quoted at 3.75 with Bet365 and Betfair while Virat Kohli can also be picked up at that same price of 3.75 with Bet365.
Ajinkya Rahane almost eclipsed Pujara in the second test and he looks a good value option at a top price of 7.00 with Bet365 while other options include Shikhar Dhawan at 5.50 with Betfair and KL Rahul at best odds of 6.00 with Betway.
There have been some bright spots for Sri Lanka in this series and hundreds from Kusal Mendis and Dimuth Karunaratne on second innings in Colombo suggests they have some fight. In the Sri Lankan version of this top batsman betting, Mendis is a clear favourite at 4.33 with Bet365 and Betway while Angelo Mathews is in second place at a top price of 5.00 with Bet365 and Betfair.
Along with Dinesh Chandimal and Upal Tharanga, Karunaratne is on offer at 5.50 with Bet365 and while we’re favouring Mendis here, our overall tip is for Virat Kohli to step up and dominate on first innings.
Top Batsman Odds Summary: India: Pujara 3.75 (Bet365), Kohli 3.75 (Bet365 – Editor’s Pick), Dhawan 5.50 (Betfair), Rahul 6.00 (Betway), Rahane 7.00 (Bet365).
Sri Lanka: Mendis 4.33 (Bet365), Mathews 5.00 (Bet365), Tharanga 5.50 (Bet365), Chandimal 5.50 (Bet365), Karunaratne 5.50 (Bet365).
Other Side Bets
There is some conjecture as to who will replace Jadeja in the side and although Axar Patel has been called up to the squad, it’s felt that Kuldeep Yadav will take over the spinning duties. This has all contributed to leave R Ashwin as a runaway favourite to return best first innings figures for India and he can be backed at best odds of 2.75 with Bet365.
Axar Patel is at 4.00 with Bet365 and Betway and it’s not inconceivable that India would want to include both Patel and Kuldeep Yadav given the success that the spinners have had. There are other options here but Kuldeep Yadav is our pick at a top price of 3.50 with Bet365.
India Top Bowler Odds Summary: Ashwin 2.75 (Bet365), Kuldeep Yadav 3.50 (Bet365), Patel 4.00 (Bet365), Shami 6.50 (Betway), Umesh Yadav 6.50 (Betway).
The bowlers will have their part to play and we could see more resistance from the Sri Lankan batters but it’s India’s batsmen who are in peak form and set to deliver a 3-0 series whitewash.
