After getting on the wrong end of a series whitewash in the tests, Sri Lanka will be hoping that they can be more competitive in the ODI series which starts on Sunday. India have taken the opportunity to make a number of changes from the squad that last played limited overs cricket in the West Indies but there is no change in the market ahead of this first game.
India start as hot favourites once again and you can back the tourists for the win at best odds of 1.33 with Betfair. Victory for Sri Lanka completes the result market at 3.75 with Bet365 and while the hosts recently beat their opponents in the ICC Champions Trophy, can they really get a repeat win here?
Over five games, we expect Sri Lanka to come home in at least one of them and if rain doesn’t intervene, a correct series score of 4-1 to India looks good at 13/8 with Bet365. As for this game, we think that the tourists will carry through the momentum from the tests and take the opener quite comfortably.
Match Odds Summary: Sri Lanka 3.75 (Bet365), India 1.33 (Betfair – Editor’s Pick).
The majority of India’s batsmen come into this series in excellent form and their version of the top batsman market is going to be tough to call. A couple of years back you could just bet on Virat Kohli throughout and almost guarantee a profit at the end of the series but there are many more contenders now.
Options include Kohli as the favourite at 3.75 with Bet365 while Rohit Sharma follows at 4.00 with Bet365 again. Shikhar Dhawan enjoyed a prolific test series and can be found at 4.50 with Bet365 while Ajinkya Rahane is slightly further back at 5.50, also with Bet365.
MS Dhoni at 9.00 with Bet365 and Hardik Pandya at a seriously tempting 17.00 with Bet365 are value punts down the order but we’re backing Dhawan to carry that form through to the ODIs.
For Sri Lanka, Kusal Mendis gets us underway at a top price of 4.50 with Bet365 with Niroshan Dickwella following at best odds of 5.00 with Bet365 again. Angelo Mathews is still looking to regain some form but could be worth considering at 5.00 with Bet365 but if you want an outside punt, Thisara Perera might just be your man at a tempting price of 13.00, also with Bet365.
We favour Dickwella in this particular market but Dhawan is our overall tip from the top batsmen betting.
Top Batsman Odds Summary: Sri Lanka: Mendis 4.50 (Bet365), Dickwella 5.00 (Bet365), Mathews 5.00 (Bet365), Perera 13.00 (Bet365).
India: Kohli 3.75 (Bet365), Sharma 4.00 (Bet365), Dhawan 4.50 (Bet365 – Editor’s Pick), Rahane 5.50 (Bet365), Dhoni 9.00 (Bet365), Pandya 17.00 (Bet365).
Other Side Bets
There are a number of options for our final tip of the day and we’re quite tempted by the Man of the Match betting which shows Virat Kohli as the favourite at best odds of 6.00 with Bet365. Rohit Sharma follows at 7.00 with Bet365 again but the name that interests us is Hardik Pandya at a top price of 14.00 with Bet365.
After scoring his maiden ton in the third test, Pandya could carry that batting form over and with a few potential wickets he is a good option to say the least.
We may yet put a small wager on that but we’ll complete the list of tips by taking the century bet and backing at least one player to score a ton which is at reasonable best odds of 1.72 with Bet365.
Will a player score a hundred odds summary: Yes 1.72 (Bet365 – Editor’s Pick), No 2.00 (Bet365)
With Ashwin and Jadeja rested, Sri Lanka have a better chance of posting some decent totals but it may not be enough to stop India starting this series with a win.
