The BCCI announced the ODI squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka and they made quite a few changes. The selectors decided to rest spin twins R Ashwin and R Jadeja who have had a heavy workload in test matches during 2017. They decided to go with left arm spinner Axar Patel to replace Jadeja and leggie Y Chahal for Aswin.
The selectors also decided to drop wicket-keeper batsman D Karthick and replace him with KL Rahul who has been in good form in the test series. R Pant who many believe is the future wicket-keeper batsman for India also got the sack as the selectors preferred to play MS Dhoni. There were a lot of speculation leading up to the selection that MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh might not get picked.
Yuvraj Not In Selectors Plans
They were right partially as Yuvraj has been dropped and give the fact that he is not 35, it is highly unlikely that the selectors will go back to him as they are preparing a potential squad for the 2019 World Cup and it appears that Yuvraj Singh is not part of their plans. MS Dhoni on the other hand has been given another chance and his performance with the bat will be critical in determining whether he will play be a part of the 2019 World Cup.
One of the BCCI selectors who preferred to be anonymous stated that the selection panel had a lengthy discussion on both Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni. The selectors said they noticed that Yuvraj’s fitness levels have dropped, his batting has also lost its firepower and he no longer contributed with the ball. The selectors have chosen M Pandey as his replacement.
MS Dhoni Will Be Under Pressure
The same selector said that while there were discussions about MS Dhoni’s place in the squad, it was a lot harder to find a like-for-like replacement for him. He is getting another opportunity to put his hand up and show that he can be a key player in the middle-order. If he has another failure in the Sri Lankan series, it is highly likely that Dhoni will be dropped or forced to retire.
With less than 2 years left for the 2019 World Cup, Captain Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri will be looking to finalize on a group of 15 players who are guaranteed to be a part of the World Cup squad.
