India may have only started as fourth favourites to retain the ICC Champions Trophy but the nature of their emphatic win over Pakistan suggests they are in good shape for a successful title defence. Next up for Virat Kohli’s men is a Sri Lankan side who fell away badly after starting their run chase against South Africa in positive fashion.
Victory in this fixture should be enough to see India through to the semi finals and the bookies are backing them all the way.
India start as hot favourites here and you can currently back Kohli’s side at a top price of 1.29 with Betway. It’s a figure that leaves the Sri Lankans out at 4.00 with Bet365 and it’s hard to argue with that set of odds.
Sri Lanka came into their game with South Africa with only four frontline bowlers and that’s a plan that’s not going to work in the modern game. In fact, they should have been facing a bigger total and while their run chase started well, their collapse underlined a lack of depth.
They do miss Angelo Mathews but the skipper hasn’t looked fit for some time and while there will be changes to their line up, India have the strength and quality to expose all of these weaknesses.
Match Odds Summary: India 1.29 (Betway – Editor’s Pick), Sri Lanka 4.00 (Bet365)
We backed Shikhar Dhawan for India last time out and he gave us a decent run for our money but it was Rohit Sharma who eventually top scored with 91. Both of those men start the Sri Lankan game at 4.33 with Bet365 while Virat Kohli is installed as favourite at 3.40 with Bet365 again.
Also in good touch was Yuvraj Singh who is on offer at a top price of 7.50 with Bet365 while MS Dhoni is listed at best odds of 9.00 – also with Bet365. It was good to see so many batters hit form against Pakistan but perhaps the most pleasing sight was Kohli who had struggled in the IPL. While 3.40 is a little short when you have so many alternatives, the skipper is our tip here.
In Sri Lanka’s version of the top batsman market Kusal Mendis is the favourite at 4.33 with Bet365 ahead of Niroshan Dickwella at 5.00 with Bet365. Angelo Mathews is included in the betting at 5.50 with Bet365 while Dinesh Chandimal is also at 5.50 with Bet365.
Chandimal is good value at that price and would be our preference but Kohli is the overall tip from the top batsman markets.
Top Batsman Odds Summary: India: Kohli 3.40 (Bet365 – Editor’s Pick), Sharma 4.33 (Bet365), Dhawan 4.33 (Bet365), Yuvraj 7.50 (Bet365), Dhoni 9.00 (Bet365).
Sri Lanka: Mendis 4.33 (Bet365), Dickwella 5.00 (Bet365), Mathews 5.50 (Bet365), Chandimal 5.50 (Bet365).
Other Side Bets
Umesh Yadav gave the profit in India’s top bowler market in that win over Pakistan and will therefore tempt many for this game at a best of 5.00 with Bet365. Jasprit Bumrah is the favourite at 4.00 with Bet365 while a number of bowlers go off at 4.50 with Bet365 including R Ashwin and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Ideally, we would like to take the individual century bet at 1.66 with Bet365 but we just can’t trust the English weather to give us a full game so instead, we’ll keep faith with Bhuvneshwar Kumar in that top bowler betting.
India Top Bowler Odds Summary: Bumrah 4.00 (Bet365), Ashwin 4.50 (Bet365), Kumar 4.50 (Bet365 – Editor’s Pick), Yadav 5.00 (Bet365), Jadeja 5.00 (Bet365).
Bowlers will keep things tight but it’s the batsmen that should give India the edge on Thursday and with so many finding early form against Pakistan, we’re backing another Indian win at The Oval.
