Match 49 – Kings XI Punjab v Kolkata Knight Riders Preview

Despite a very mixed campaign that has seen them win five and lose six of their 11 games so far, Kings XI Punjab remain in with a chance of making it out of the groups and into the knockout phase for the first time since they made the final in 2014.

If Glenn Maxwell’s side are to progress, they will have to do it the hard way, hoping, firstly, that Sunrisers lose to Mumbai on Monday and then take the points from an impressive KKR side who will cement their position in the knockouts with a win here

Match Odds

The Knight Riders swept RCB aside on Sunday and Gautam Gambhir’s men are the obvious favourites to take the points at best odds of 1.91 with Betway. Kings XI follow at 2.00 with Bet365 and Betway but it may surprise many to see the market as close as it is.

KXIP have the home advantage and they seem to have found the best balance of overseas players but bowling is weak against the best teams and they now have to play KKR, Mumbai and Pune if they are to progress. That’s for the long term but against a blistering Knight Riders top order that has Aussie Chris Lynn back and firing, we have to side with the favourites here.

Match Odds Summary: Kings XI Punjab: 2.00 (Bet365), Kolkata Knight Riders 1.91 (Betway).

Top Batsmen

Hashim Amla scored his second century of IPL 10 in Sunday’s game against the Lions and the prolific South African is joint favourite to top score for his side on Tuesday at odds of 4.00 with Bet365. Martin Guptill shares that price of 4.00 with Bet365 while Shaun Marsh and Glenn Maxwell are marginally further back at 4.50 with Bet365 once again.

David Miller is another option at 5.00 with Bet365 but I’m backing Maxwell to step up and provide a big and responsible innings when his side really needs it.

Sunil Narine did it again on Sunday with an incredible 50 in that win over RCB. The West Indian has somehow been more valuable to KKR as a batsman than a bowler this season and the pinch hitter goes off here at 5.00 with Bet365.

Narine is one of a clutch of players starting at 5.00 and that list includes Chris Lynn, Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa. All are potential candidates but Lynn, if he remains fit, does tend to stay in a strong run of form once he finds his touch.

Top Batsman Odds Summary: Kings XI Punjab: Amla 4.00 (Bet365), Guptill 4.00 (Bet365), Maxwell 4.50 (Bet365 – Editor’s Pick), Marsh 4.50 (Editor’s Pick), Miller 5.00 (Bet365)

Kolkata Knight Riders: Narine 5.00 (Bet365), Gambhir, 5.00 (Bet365), Uthappa 5.00 (Bet365), Lynn 5.00 (Bet365).

Other Side Bets

Given the explosive hitting in both camps you wouldn’t necessarily rule out an individual century being scored which comes in at a top price of 7.00 with Bet365. That’s always going to be a long shot in T20 but it may be worth a small wager this time around.

For our final tip, however, we’ll be heading to the Most Sixes market where there is definite value with the Knight Riders at an odds against price of 2.05 with Bet365. Kings XI are quoted at 2.10 with Bet365 with the tie at 7.50 with Bet365 again but if Lynn and Narine can get even close to the same level of performance they showed against RCB, this market should be a formality.

Most Sixes Odds Summary: Kings XI Punjab 2.10 (Bet365), Kolkata Knight Riders 2.05 (Bet365 – Editor’s Pick), the Tie 7.50 (Bet365).

That explosive hitting could also take KKR to the points on Tuesday but all round, they are just a better side and based on form, plus depth of quality in batting and bowling, it should be a win for Gambhir’s men.
