Before the start of the home season, R Ashwin had the mantle of being the number one spinner in India and his performance during the first two series proved that he is indeed a great spinner. However he had a much lesser impact against the Australians and his spin-twin Ravindra Jadeja decided to step up and prove that he has the ability to be right up there with Ashwin.
Jadeja who has scored triple centuries in domestic cricket has not really performed with the bat as much as he would have liked to in test cricket but come the fourth test in Dharamsala, he was the highest scorer for Indian in the first innings, making a crucial 63 of 95 balls to give India a vital first innings lead. He also picked up three crucial wickets in the second innings to bowl Australia out for just 137 and put India in a commanding position.
Jadeja was awarded the man of the match for his 63 runs and 4 wickets in the match and was also given the man of the series award for his 25 wickets at an economy rate of just 2.17 and making 127 runs at an average of 25.40. He will take a lot of confidence from his performance right throughout the home season and the fact that he is now the number one ranked test bowler in the world.
In a statement, Jadeja said “Very good to be the No. 1 Test bowler. And being part of this champion Test side. When I batted, I was thinking to take my time and then Matthew Wade chirped from behind. That motivated me. If I can respond to him with runs, it will be great. Coaches and captain have been telling me I have the skill to bat long. I developed as a player overall. Some time ago people didn’t consider me a Test bowler. This season is a good response to them.”
Jadeja not only performed with both bat and ball but he was a livewire in the field and his fitness and attitude has rubbed off on a number of players. His fitness has also enabled him to bowl more than 500 overs this season and be free of injuries. The competition between him and R Ashwin is also healthy as they share a good relationship and look to push each other to new levels.
