India continued to dominate England in the 5 test match series after winning the third test in Mohali to take a commanding 2-0 lead after three tests. India won with a day to spare and showed completed dominance over the English side on a pitch that had no demons in it.
The Indian spin trio of R Ashwin, R Jadeja and J Yadav proved to be a lot better than the English spinners. Special mention must be made of Jadeja’s performance in the match as he not only contributed with the ball sending down 53 overs and taking 4 wickets but also made a critical 90 runs in the first innings to give India a lead of over 100 runs that proved to be critical in the end.
England struggled in the second innings after young opener H Hameed was forced to drop down the order due to a finger injury. England lost four wickets and effectively the match during the final session on the third day. Hameed came out to bat on the fourth day and made a well complied 59 down the order but eventually ran out of partners and remained unbeaten, giving India a target of just 104 to win. The Indians chased it down after losing 2 wickets but at no stage in the match did they look to be under real pressure.
R Jadeja was awarded the man of the match award and during the post match-presentation he said “Obviously very happy with my performance. Especially with the bat. I knew if I play 40-50 balls, I could play a big innings. I knew I could easily score runs later on. I was just thinking I was not taking a chance against the offspinner. I took the risk against the legspinner. Unfortunately the ball came off slowly, and I couldn’t connect it. The next time I reach 90 I will be careful. The pitch wasn’t turning pitch so I had to bowl tight. Myself and Virat discussed that I should bowl five maidens in a row. Fortunately I got Stokes in the first innings and Root in the second.”
England can no longer win the series but will be looking to fight hard in the remaining two matches and see if they can secure a draw. It is going to be difficult for them as young Hameed now has to return home. There is no indication as of now if England will look for a replacement opener or recall B Duckett to the side.
