Nita Ambani is used to receiving a lot of attention as she is married to Mukesh Ambani, the richest man in India. Nita has had a fair share of the limelight during the past few years as she has been seen cheering on the Mumbai Indians, an IPL franchise that the Ambani’s own.
This time around Nita Ambani has made the news for being nominated as a new member to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Nita who is also the Founder and Chairperson of the Reliance Foundation becomes the first woman from India to be nominated to the IOC. She received support from Abhinav Bindra and Sachin Tendulkar who backed her nomination into the IOC.
The election for new IOC members will take place at the 129th IOC Session between 2nd and 4th August in Rio de Janeiro. The IOC now has a new selection process for the recruitment of IOC members which will follow the Olympic Agenda 2020 recommendations. Should Nita Ambani been appointed as a member of the IOC, she will be eligible to continue till the age of 70.
Nita Ambani spends a lot of her a time pursuing her passion to improve education and sports in India and many believe that her nomination as an IOC member was due recognition. She received support and encouragement from many fronts including Hockey India.
The IOC which is based out of Switzerland serves as the final authority of the Olympic Movement and acts as the main committee that communicates and collaborates with all the different organisations in the Olympic family. Some of the organisations that the IOC collaborates with on a regular basis include United Nations agencies, the International Sports Federations (ISFs), Organising Committees for the Olympic Games (OCOGs) and National Olympic Committees (NOCs).
In a statement, Nita Ambani said “I believe in the power of sport to shape our youth, to bring together communities and bridge gaps between cultures and generations. I am grateful to IOC for this opportunity, it’s a recognition of India and Indian women. I am looking forward to the opportunity to contribute in meeting the goals of IOC.”
However not everyone in India were happy about Ambani’s nomination and some took to social media and blogging platforms to say that her nomination to the IOC was only due to the fact that she was married to the richest man in India as she had done nothing noteworthy to be nominated for such a position.
