Captain MS Dhoni will be a relieved man as he gets on the plan and flies back to India. His young squad needed to win the 3rd T20 match against Zimbabwe as the three match series was squared 1-1 each before the final match in Harare.
Zimbabwe won the toss and sent India in to bat and the Indians soon found themselves in trouble as they were left reeling at 27-3. A partnership between A Rayudu and K Jadhav stabilized the innings but some good bowling at the death helped restrict India to 138. The Indians were helped by some poor fielding as Zimbabwe put down a dropped catch, mis-fielded and gave the Indians vital runs to post a reasonable total on a pitch that had something in it for the bowlers.
Zimbabwe got off to a good start as Sibanda and Masakadza put together a nice partnership that gave the Zimbabweans a platform to launch into an attack. However India managed to pull things back with the spin of A Patel and Y Chahal who together sent down 8 overs for just 50 runs. The Zimbabweans towards the end found it difficult to keep up with the run rate but T Maruma came out and played a little cameo scoring 23 of just 13 balls took take the game into the final over.
B Sran started badly with a wide and a no-ball but then found his line and length to help India win by 3 crucial runs. The Zimbabweans will be pleased with the fight they have shown in the T20 series but will also be disappointed as they had a great opportunity to record a series win over India.
The ODI and T20 series victory over Zimbabwe will most likely give MS Dhoni another opportunity to captain the side. The Indian captain has been under a lot of pressure to relinquish the captaincy to test captain Virat Kohli as former team director Ravi Shastri has gone on record to state that it is the right time for MS Dhoni to hand over the baton to Kohli.
Shastri is also one of the names that the BCCI has shortlisted for the India head coach role. Should he be appointed as head coach, it would make things interesting for MS Dhoni as Shastri has openly backed Kohli over Dhoni as captain in all formats of the game.
