The Kings XI Punjab have now joined the Rising Pune Supergiants as they can no longer make the playoffs having accumulated 8 points from 12 games with 9 losses. This was another disappointing season for the Kings XI Punjab who changed captain’s mid-way through the tournament in an effort to revive the fortunes of the team.
South African David Miller started out as captain but a poor run of form and a lacklustre performance by the team forced co-owner Preity Zina and coach Sanjay Bangar to sack Miller and hand over the captaincy to M Vijay. To his credit, Vijay has led from the front with the bat and under his captaincy Kings XI looked a lot more unified,
However they were unable to turn things around as their overseas players let them down big time. Glenn Maxwell was a huge letdown and never could get going in the tournament and Miller’s lack of form meant that the Kings XI had a weak middle order who could not capitalize on the death overs.
The injury to Shaun Marsh also hurt their chances but in the end the other teams were just too powerful for the Kings XI to take down. Captain M Vijay knows that the remaining matches his side has in a chance for them to gel as a team and cement their places for the next season.
In a statement, M Vijay said “There are a lot of variables (but) we should have started well in the tournament to have a chance in the end. At the end, almost all the teams are set with their playing XI. They are going to come hard at us. I personally thought we have a good set up. We have a good bunch of guys who could win matches in their own right. It didn’t click for us this season. We can take the positives from this season and come back and play better cricket next season.”
The injury to Marsh gave room for South African H Amala to make an appearance for the Kings XI and his 96 of 56 balls against the Sun Risers Hyderabad might have secured him a permanent place in the side for the next season. Vijay stated that his team will play for pride as he hopes that he can give the Kings XI franchise owners something to look forward to for the 2017 IPL edition.
