Mumbai Indians v Sunrisers Hyderabad: IPL 9 – Match 37 Preview

Mumbai Indians v Sunrisers HyderabadThe IPL 9 league table is really starting to take shape now, and as we head into the business end of the competition it is clear that these two sides – the Mumbai Indians and the Sunrisers Hyderabad – will surely be in the mix for the knockout phase.

On Sunday they will lock horns at Mumbai’s temporary home in Visakhapatnam in a crucial encounter.

Match Odds & Game Preview

Mumbai Indians

This will be the Mumbai Indians’ first bow in IPL 9 at the ACA-VDCA Stadium, following the water shortage that has beset the country. There’s little information regarding the ground, although it did host a T20 international between India and Sri Lanka in February.

The Sri Lankans were skittled for 89 that day, with spin doing the damage with seven of the ten wickets to fall. Interestingly the Sunrisers’ Shikhar Dhawan plundered 46 not out that day, so this could be an interesting betting angle in.

It has been a full week since the Indians took to the field, and that rest will have probably done them some good with the IPL’s relentless schedule leaving little opportunity for putting the old feet up.

This is Hyderabad’s second match in 48 hours; and that could be problematic.

Mumbai have been in fine form recently, and three wins on the spin – comfortable ones at that – have been secured by 25 runs, six wickets and eight wickets respectively. They will have a taste for victory.

Six matches, five wins. That’s how the Sunrisers are shaping up at the moment, and David Warner and co will be delighted with that form.

They completed the double over the Gujarat Lions on Friday to propel themselves into the qualification places for the next phase of the competition, and now the job will be to stay there.

Hyderabad won the first meeting between these sides nearly three weeks ago, but a lot has happened since then.

If spin is the defining factor in this match, then you would expect the Mumbai Indians’ Harbhajan Singh to win the personal duel with Hyderabad’s Yuvraj Singh; a fine player no doubt, but one feeling his way back to full fitness following injury.

You would also fancy that the Indians’ largely sub-continent based top order – Rohit Sharma, Parthiv Patel and Ambati Rayadu – will combat slow conditions better than the antipodean trio of Warner, Moises Henriques and Kane Williamson.

Betting Tip: For these reasons, and with little else to work with given the good form of both sides, we’ll be taking Mumbai Indians to win here at 1.66 with bet365.

The notion that Dhawan should be comfortable here given past performances has been lent weight by his recent form; 56 not out and 47 not out in his last three outings is reason enough to take the 4.33 on offer from Betfair for Shikhar to top score for the Sunrisers.

If our shortlist for the top batsman market is an Asian talent with a penchant for accumulating runs, rather than bashing the ball to all parts (as dictated by the likely slow, turning wicket), the best option for the Mumbai Indians would surely be Parthiv Patel, who has notched 186 runs in IPL 9 to date at an average of 22.

Betting Tip: Patel can be backed at a best price of 5.00 with bet365.

Personal Pick

It’s the Highest Opening Partnership that catches our eye, and that’s because the Mumbai Indians’ top two is the Indian pair of Sharma and Patel [1]. They should be more compliant with the conditions than Warner, who may struggle to time the ball on the slow surface. You can get involved at 1.90 with Betfair.
