The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli has continued his pristine run of form and scored his first IPL century on Sunday against the Gujarat Lions. RCB was without the services of Chris Gayle who had gone back home to be present for the birth of his first child.
Kohli who opens the batting for RCB took control of the innings and remained unbeaten in the end, helping his side to get to 180 after forming strong partnerships with AB Devillers and K Rahul. However it wasn’t enough as the Gujarat Lions chased it down with impressive performances from Dwayne Smith, B McCullum and D Karthik.
The batting has never really been a problem for RCB as they have the likes of Gayle, DeVillers and Kohli himself. However RCB find themselves having lost three out of the five matches they have played so far because the bowling unit has been unable to fire. Kohli has used Kane Richardson in the last couple of matches but he hasn’t really delivered for RCB.
While Kohli’s form with the bat cannot be criticized, there are some who have questioned his captaincy and field placing. Kohli decided not to use the services of Stuart Binny during the Gujarat Lions game and chose to bowl out Kane Richardson who ended bowling his four overs for 53 runs. Kohli has shrugged off these defeats and is confident of coming back hard during the next game as he expects Chris Gayle to be back and could also end up making a few changes to strengthen his bowling line-up.
In a statement, Kohli said “Doesn’t really feel good right now. Batting is not a concern. We are planning a lot of things [with the ball] We want to pull our socks up. Even today, it was slow pitch, we shouldn’t have given so many balls close to the batsman that he could hit. Should have kept it away from his reach. Personal performances are good, but not having a win is difficult”
To Kohli’s defence is the fact that two of the premier T20 bowlers in Mitchell Starc and Samuel Badree are unavailable to RCB due to injury. However he has to work with what talent is available and might end up calling on Travis Head or Adam Milne to strengthen his fast bowling resources.
