The Indians are on a roll in the T-20 format and put in yet another convincing display against the Sri Lankans to secure a place in the 2016 Asia Cup final. India won the toss at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur and asked the Lankan Lions to bat.
A Nehra and J Bumrah have been successful in finding the early breakthrough in the last few matches and once again did not fail to disappoint. The Sri Lankans were unable to get a good start and lost wickets at regular interviews as they tried to raise the run rate and get past 150. C Kapugedera held the innings together for Sri Lanka and a late cameo from hard hitting all-rounder T Perera helped Sri Lanka to get to a total of 138.
The Lankans started on a good note dismissing the inform R Sharma and the returning S Dhawan. That brought V Kohli to the crease and he continued where he left off against Pakistan finding the boundary at will and steadying the ship. Kohli formed partnerships with S Raina and Yuvraj Singh to help Indian get well within reach of the total.
Yuvraj deserves a special mention as he played a cameo that included three fours and three sixes and showed both fans and selectors that he is still a force to be reckoned with. He was particularly harsh on R Herath hoisting him for two sixes in an over and looked to be getting himself back into form before he mishit one that went straight to Kulasekara.
During the post match conference, Yuvraj said “Felt pretty good. I needed those hits for my confidence. Not the easiest wicket to bat on, you need to go there and give yourself some time. My job was to go and play the situation, this game and the last game. Just happy I’m hitting the ball well.”
There were quite a few records created during this match as Yuvraj has now hit the most sixes in the T20 format, surpassing Pakistan’s S Afridi. Vice captain Virat Kohli hit yet another fifty and remained unbeaten on 56 and in doing so has taken his T20 average to 51.03.
Kohli was also awarded the man of the match award and now shares the record of having thirteen half centuries in the T20 format with C Gayle and B McCullum. India could end up facing either Pakistan or Bangladesh depending on how the next few matches turn out.
